I love the custom of sharing apples. Baskets and fruit boxes displayed in front of houses welcomed us during our northern European journey through national parks from Scania to Podlasie.
In Latvia, we ate red apples, sweet as raspberries, at a campsite on Gauja. At the market in Riga, on the left bank of the Daugava River, we found more of them. Gunts and Kaspars, father and son, bring them every week from Courland, from the sea.
